The name, inspired by Moby Dick, comes from the seafaring tradition of the old coffee merchants and their love of the open sea.

In 1981, Howard Schultz (Starbucks chairman, chief executive officer) took his first step into a Starbucks store. Schultz entered Starbucks with his first cup of Sumatra and joined the company a year later.

A year later, in 1983, Howard Schultz traveled to Italy and was fascinated by Italian espresso bars and their love for the coffee experience. He wanted to bring the Italian café tradition to the United States. To create a place where people could come together and host conversations... To create their third address after home and work... Schultz left Starbucks for a short time to open Il Giornale cafes and returned to the company in August 1987, buying Starbucks with the help of local investors. Since its inception, Starbucks has been a different kind of company. It offered not just coffee and a rich coffee culture, but an experience.
