YouTube content does help GEO (generative engine optimization), but the effect is small and depends heavily on the model. In Edvido's 30-day measurement, AI models produced 18,934 source citations; 24 of them pointed to YouTube. All 24 came from Gemini. ChatGPT and Perplexity did not cite YouTube once in the same period, and 22 of the 24 citations went to videos on Edvido's own channel. YouTube is a way for your brand to show up in Google-side AI answers in its own voice. It is not a GEO strategy on its own.
"If we publish videos on YouTube, will ChatGPT recommend us?" is one of the questions we hear most often from marketing teams right now. We wanted to answer it with measurement rather than opinion. This article shares the numbers from the system we use to track AI answers about our own brand, what those numbers mean, and how to prepare YouTube content so AI models can actually use it.
For the text side of AI visibility, see our guide on how to boost your brand visibility in ChatGPT.
- 18,934 source citations in AI answers, across 1,848 domains.
- Citations to YouTube: 24 (about 0.13%), ranked 106th among domains.
- All 24 came from Gemini; ChatGPT 0, Perplexity 0.
- 22 of the 24 went to five videos on Edvido's own YouTube channel.
- In the previous 30-day window YouTube citations were 0.
How Does YouTube Content Contribute to GEO?

GEO is the work of getting AI models to mention your brand and cite your pages when they answer a question. Models search the web, read the pages they find and list sources under the answer. For a YouTube video to enter that chain, the model has to find it and read its content as text.
YouTube contributes to GEO in three ways:
- The text layer: Models do not watch your video; they read the text around it. The title, description, chapter titles and captions or transcript are the raw material for the model's view of what the video says.
- The Google ecosystem: YouTube and Gemini belong to the same company. In our data Gemini was the only model that cited YouTube at all, which suggests YouTube is read most easily on the Google side of AI search.
- Your own voice off your own domain: Most AI citations come from outside the brand's website. In our measurement about 80% of citations went to domains other than edvido.com. YouTube lets a brand publish its own explanation on a different, widely trusted domain.
- It helps: Gemini cites YouTube videos as sources.
- It is limited: ChatGPT and Perplexity cited YouTube zero times in the same period.
- It is measurable: you can track which video is cited for which question, and by which model.
Edvido Data: How Often Do AI Models Cite YouTube?

Edvido measures AI answers about its own brand and competitors on a regular schedule. We ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity a fixed set of questions about choosing agencies, agency pricing and digital marketing services, and record every source listed under each answer. The figures below cover 30 days, from 6 October to 5 November 2026.
| Model | Total source citations | YouTube citations |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 7,267 | 24 |
| Perplexity | 6,419 | 0 |
| ChatGPT | 5,248 | 0 |
| Total | 18,934 | 24 |
Two conclusions follow. First, YouTube is a small share of the total: 106th out of 1,848 domains. Second, that share comes entirely from one model. Asked the same questions over 30 days, ChatGPT and Perplexity never linked to YouTube.
Whose videos were cited?
We checked every cited video and verified its channel:
| Video | Channel | Citations |
|---|---|---|
| How Edvido works: B2B agency and software firm matching | Edvido Türkiye | 15 |
| Türkiye 2026 digital agency report: real budgets | Edvido Türkiye | 3 |
| What is PR work and how is it done? | Edvido Türkiye | 2 |
| Benefits of social media for businesses | Edvido Türkiye | 1 |
| Getting offers from agencies (Shorts) | Edvido Türkiye | 1 |
| Other channels (2 videos) | Third party | 2 |
The most cited video was the explainer on how the platform works. When Gemini describes what a brand is and how it works, it can pick the brand's own explanation on YouTube as a source. The second most cited was a data report, cited in answers about budgets and figures.
In the previous 30-day window YouTube citations were zero. Part of the increase may come from the videos being new and part from changes in the question set, so we read the number as proof that YouTube can be cited, not as a trend.
- Gemini answers
- Questions about what a brand is and how it works
- Data reports and explainer videos
- ChatGPT and Perplexity answers
- "Best agency" list questions
- Videos with thin titles and empty descriptions
How to Prepare a YouTube Video for GEO

Recording a video is not enough. For a model to find and understand it, the text around the video has to be prepared with care. We turned what the cited videos on our channel had in common into a checklist:
- Put the question in the title. Choose a title close to what people ask an AI assistant, such as "What Is PR Work and How Is It Done?". Clever but vague titles make matching harder.
- Answer in the first two sentences of the description. The description is the first text the model reads. Summarise the answer, and state your brand name and what you do.
- Fix the captions. Auto-generated captions often misspell brand names and industry terms. Correct and upload them; the model reads you as the captions spell you.
- Add chapters. Write timestamped chapter titles in the description. Each chapter title can read as an answer to a separate question.
- Embed the video on your site. Add the video to the matching page and use VideoObject structured data, so the video and the page are tied to the same topic.
- Give numbers and say where they come from. On our channel a data report was the second most cited video. Videos that state ranges and their source are easier to use in an answer.
These steps overlap heavily with classic YouTube SEO. The difference is the goal: readability rather than views. AI models do not watch your video; they read its title, description and captions.
Which video formats suit GEO best?
- How-it-works videos: a short explanation of what your brand does, who it serves and how the process runs. This was the most cited format in our data.
- Data and report videos: videos that present your own figures. Models can reuse those figures in their answers.
- "What is, how to" videos: educational videos that answer a common question in your industry directly.
- Shorts: they can be cited, but their narrow description and caption space makes them weaker. Use them next to long videos, not instead of them.

You cannot read YouTube's GEO impact from view counts. A video can have few views and be cited often in AI answers, or the other way round. We recommend tracking three things:
- Citation count by model: how often your videos are cited for the questions you track, and by which model. In our case the whole picture depended on Gemini. Without the per-model split, "YouTube works" and "YouTube does not work" are both misleading.
- Which video, which question: look at which video each citation goes to. For us, 15 of 24 citations went to a single video. That split tells you which format works.
- Your channel versus others: separate citations to your own channel from citations to other channels that mention you. The first is a content job; the second is partnerships and reputation.
Measure each model separately and avoid compressing the result into a single "AI visibility" score. With the same question set, one model may cite YouTube regularly while the other two never do.
Is YouTube Enough on Its Own?
No. In our measurement YouTube received about 0.13% of all citations. In the same period about 20% went to edvido.com and most of the rest to third-party sources such as directories, news sites and agency lists. Showing up in AI answers still depends mostly on clear, data-backed pages on your own site and on what other sites say about you.
Here is how we suggest positioning YouTube within that picture:
- Produce a video version of your most important pages (services, pricing, how it works) and embed it on that page.
- If visibility in Gemini and Google's AI features matters to you, make YouTube one of your priority channels.
- For ChatGPT and Perplexity, the text content on your site and presence on third-party sources matter more.
If you plan to outsource video production, compare video production agencies. For the search and AI side, see SEO agencies, and if YouTube will also run as a paid channel, performance marketing agencies. Method and Limits
- Source: Edvido's AI visibility measurement. A fixed set of questions on choosing agencies, pricing and digital marketing services is asked regularly to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and the sources in each answer are recorded.
- Period: 6 October – 5 November 2026 (30 days).
- Channel check: the channel of every cited YouTube video was verified through YouTube's own embed information service.
- Limits: the question set focuses on Edvido's industry (agencies and digital services). In other industries, especially those dominated by "how to" questions, YouTube's share may be different. Google's AI Overviews in search results are not part of this measurement. The numbers are small; a single video can change the picture noticeably.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does publishing on YouTube help GEO?
Yes, but it depends on the model. In Edvido's 30-day measurement, 24 of 18,934 AI citations went to YouTube and all of them came from Gemini. ChatGPT and Perplexity did not cite YouTube in the same period.
Does ChatGPT cite YouTube videos?
Not in the question set we tracked between 6 October and 5 November 2026. None of ChatGPT's 5,248 source citations went to YouTube. This applies to questions in our industry; results may differ for other topics.
How do AI models read a YouTube video?
They do not watch it; they read the text that belongs to it. The title, description, chapter titles and captions are the most important fields. Correcting captions and answering in the first sentences of the description make a video easier to read.
Which type of video works best for GEO?
On our channel the most cited video was an explainer on how the platform works (15 of 24 citations), followed by a data report. Videos that answer the question directly and give figures are easier to use in answers.
Is YouTube SEO the same as YouTube GEO?
They overlap a lot: good titles, descriptions, captions and chapters help both. The goal differs. YouTube SEO aims for views in YouTube search and recommendations; GEO aims for citations in AI answers. Measure them separately.
Can I find an agency for YouTube and GEO work?
Yes. On Edvido you can compare video production, SEO and performance marketing agencies and get matched with teams that fit your project. Send your brief, get matched right away, completely free.
