Bilingual layout is the first web design decision in MENA
Almost every serious commission across this region ends up carrying two writing directions. Arabic runs right to left, English runs left to right, and a page that holds both is not one layout with a switched stylesheet. Navigation flips. Icons that imply forward motion flip. Progress indicators, breadcrumbs and carousel arrows flip. Logos and numerals usually do not. Deciding which elements mirror and which stay put is a web design decision rather than a build task, and it belongs at the start of the work rather than at the end.
Ask candidates to walk you through a mirrored page they produced, showing both directions side by side. Studios that treat the second direction as a translation task will show you a version where the type looks cramped, the line height was never adjusted, and English fragments sit awkwardly inside Arabic sentences. Studios that treat it as a web design problem will have drawn two versions of the grid.
Arabic typography rewards studios that have suffered for it
Arabic letterforms connect, they carry diacritics, and the vertical space a line occupies has little to do with what a Latin typeface of the same nominal size would need. Choose the wrong family and body copy becomes tiring at exactly the sizes that felt comfortable in the English mockup. Pair two families badly and the bilingual page looks like two different brands.
A studio that regularly works in both scripts will tell you which weights actually exist in the family you liked, whether it covers the punctuation and numeral forms you need, and what the licence costs for web use. This is a genuine regional advantage, and it is one of the better reasons to commission web design here rather than somewhere with no daily exposure to the script.
Who approves, and how many of them are there
Family ownership, group structures and government linked entities are common in this market, and they produce approval chains that outsiders underestimate. The person who briefed you may not be the person whose opinion ends the argument. Creative work then cycles through rounds that nobody scoped.
Before the first presentation, write down who has veto power over visual direction and get that list confirmed. Agree that all comments are consolidated by one person on your side before they reach the studio. If a senior stakeholder will only see the work at a late stage, build that viewing into the schedule as a named milestone instead of pretending it will not happen.
The working week and the calendar around it
Working weeks across the region do not line up with each other or with the buyer's, and the two main religious holidays move through the calendar each year, taking a meaningful chunk of commercial activity with them. Neither fact is an obstacle, but both belong in the plan.
Ask which days the studio works and which days its own suppliers work, since photographers, illustrators and voice talent may keep a different pattern. If your launch has a fixed commercial date, count backwards through the holiday period rather than assuming a clear run.
What the deliverable list should say
Vague scopes are the main reason a web design project in MENA finishes over budget, and the fix is boring precision. Name the templates rather than counting pages: home, category, article, product or service detail, contact, and whatever your business genuinely needs beyond those. State that each template is delivered in both writing directions and at the breakpoints you care about.
Then name the web design system underneath. Colour tokens with their contrast pairs, a type scale that works in both scripts, spacing rules, button and form states, error and empty states. Without that layer you have bought a set of pictures, and the first page nobody drew will look like it came from a different company.
Rights, files and the awkward conversation about reuse
- Which entity owns the final artwork, and from what moment?
- Do we receive the editable source files, or exported images only?
- Are the fonts licensed to us directly, and for how many page views?
- May the studio publish this work, and do we get to see it before they do?
- If we appoint a different supplier next year, what exactly transfers?
The font question catches people out repeatedly. A licence bought by the studio for its own production work may not cover your live site at all, and discovering this after launch is both expensive and urgent.
Comparing web design agencies in MENA on evidence rather than reputation
Rate cards for web design vary enormously here and tell you very little. A boutique with four senior people can cost more than a larger firm and deliver a stronger result, because in creative work the seniority of the person actually drawing is the variable that matters. Ask who holds the pen, not how many staff the company employs.
Give three candidates the same brief, ask each for their reasoning in writing, and read the questions they send back. Then look at their existing work in Arabic on a phone, which is how most of your audience will meet your brand. Anything that only holds together on a large screen has not been tested against reality.
The directory lists verified web design agencies with profiles you can compare side by side, along with related disciplines such as animation studios, social media agencies and public relations agencies covering the same markets. When your shortlist is ready, request matched proposals and send every studio an identical brief. Where construction is a separate appointment, start from the listed web development companies.
