Istanbul runs on Instagram, and that changes what you are buying
Usage here is intense rather than broad, and Instagram sits at the centre of it for consumer categories. Stories carry more commercial weight than the permanent grid, saved posts and shares function as the real quality signal, and brands that publish three polished images a week while ignoring daily Stories look absent to their own followers.
TikTok has become the discovery engine for younger audiences and for anything visual or entertaining. YouTube holds long-form review and tutorial behaviour that decides considered purchases. X remains where the day's argument happens, which matters for reputation rather than for sales. WhatsApp and Telegram carry customer conversation. A proposal that treats all of these as one deliverable stream has not thought about which one earns money for you.
Turkish copy is rewritten, and it is written fast
Turkish is not a language that survives machine translation from English. Word order, suffix chains and the way emphasis is carried mean a literal conversion reads as clumsy at best. Humour is central to how brands are received here, and humour is the first thing lost in translation.
There is also a tempo problem. The national conversation moves in hours, and a brand that wants to participate in a trending moment has that day, not that week. Decide in advance what the agency may publish without approval, what is permanently off limits, and who can be reached quickly for the genuinely uncertain cases. Without that agreement, every reactive idea dies in a mailbox.
Direct messages, marketplaces and where the order actually lands
A large share of smaller-basket commerce still closes in conversation. A shopper asks for the price under a post, moves to messaging, agrees on a size or a delivery date and pays. At the same time, most established retail demand flows through large local marketplaces, which have their own advertising systems and their own logic about visibility.
The strategic question is how social feeds those two routes. Sending everything to a marketplace listing builds someone else's customer relationship. Selling entirely in direct messages does not scale and leaves no data. A good local team will propose a deliberate split and will tell you which categories justify the effort of running both.
A professionalised creator market with enforced labelling
Creator marketing here is mature, with talent represented by agencies, negotiated rate cards, and package pricing that bundles Stories, in-feed content and usage rights. Both large accounts and tightly focused niche creators are commercially viable, and the second group frequently produces better returns for specialist products.
Disclosure is not optional. The advertising regulator requires paid collaborations to be labelled clearly and visibly, in a way the audience actually sees rather than hidden below a fold of hashtags, and responsibility reaches the advertiser rather than stopping with the creator. Regulated categories, particularly health products, supplements, cosmetic procedures and financial services, carry additional restrictions on what may be claimed at all. Ask how the agency briefs creators on this, and ask to see a labelled example.
Access, platform rules and the contingency plan
Platforms operating at scale here are subject to local legal representation and content removal requirements, and there have been periods of disrupted access during major news events. For a brand, this is not a political matter but an operational one. If your customer service runs entirely through a single platform, an interruption becomes a service outage.
Ask a prospective partner what the fallback is. A maintained email list, a messaging channel and a website capable of taking an order are cheap insurance, and an agency that has lived through a disruption will raise this before you do.
Planning in an economy that reprices
Media costs and production costs move more quickly than annual budget cycles are built for, and a plan fixed twelve months ahead in a foreign currency behaves differently by the middle of the year. Many buyers move to shorter commitments with review points, or agree an indexation method in advance rather than renegotiating under pressure.
Settle three things in the contract: the invoicing currency, when and how the retainer can be revised, and who carries the difference on media booked in advance. This is ordinary practice locally and is usually the biggest gap between an imported template contract and a workable one.
The Istanbul calendar does not match the global one
Ramadan reshapes the day, with viewing and spending concentrated after sunset, and the feast that follows is a genuine retail peak. The second religious holiday later in the year clears the city as people travel. Summer moves a substantial audience to the coast for weeks, changing both attention and what they buy. The school return produces a hard demand spike, and the year-end discount season has its own local branding and its own sceptical audience.
Ask for a dated plan mapped to that shape. If the proposal is a set of themes with no dates, it was written for a country with a different year.
Own the accounts, the pixel and the number
Your Business Manager, ad accounts, pixel, catalogue, verified profiles and business messaging number belong under your company, with the agency holding partner access you can revoke. Accounts opened under an agency profile are painful to recover and sometimes cannot be recovered at all.
Put the exit in the agreement on day one: listed assets, administrator transfer, exports of creative files and message history, and a transition window. It takes a paragraph and it prevents the most expensive kind of dispute.
Using a local team beyond the local market
Many agencies here also produce for export brands and for audiences abroad, helped by a working day that overlaps comfortably with both European and Gulf clients and by production costs well below those markets. Turkish-speaking communities in German-speaking countries are a real commercial audience served from here.
If that is part of your interest, test it specifically. Ask which languages are written in house rather than outsourced, who reviews the output, and which foreign accounts they run today. Domestic excellence does not automatically transfer.
Shortlisting a social media partner in Istanbul
Ask for live account links, and read the Stories highlights and comment sections rather than the case study deck. Ask who writes, who replies to messages, and whether those people stay once the pitch team moves on. Ask for a campaign that did not work and what they changed afterwards.
You can browse verified teams in the social media agency directory, compare category experience and client feedback, and see how each firm frames its results. Brands scoping a fuller programme often combine this with performance and search execution or press and reputation work, and settling the boundary early stops two partners invoicing for the same activity. When the shortlist is ready, request tailored quotes and give every agency the same brief, the same period and the same definition of success.
